ReadOut 2024
Banning books, as a trend, is on the rise. Defense of Democracy fights to protect intellectual freedom for all people and I am proud to have signed their pledge to promote their ideals which are rooted in social justice for all.
Defense of Democracy kicks off Banned Books Week with an annual ReadOut event. The Georgia chapter is hosting a virtual event on September 22 at 6 o’clock.
We will discuss the American Library Association’s 10th most challenged book of 2023 — SOLD by Patricia McCormick. I am proud to be joining Patricia for the virtual discussion of her book, “a harrowing account of a sexual slavery. Alternating lyrical imagery with precise detail, McCormick gives voice to the terror and bewilderment of a young girl robbed of her childhood but who finds the strength to triumph”. During the discussion I will share my thoughts about the rise of book bans and their relation to extremist attempts to defund public education.
Join my team, Southern SOLDiers and get the link to the virtual discussion here: https://givebutter.com/RO24GA. Pick up your copy of SOLD at your local bookstore. My Communications Director wants me to mention that the event tee shirts are incredibly soft and that she highly recommends you purchase yours which you can do here.
